Do you know an older or frail adult who has limited mobility? Do you think he or she might enjoy regular visits from a caring volunteer? Would assistance with shopping and transportation make a difference? We can make it happen.
Homebound individuals and those with limited mobility frequently feel very isolated, missing the day-to-day interactions that naturally come with employment, going to the movies with friends, and even shopping. In addition, they find that community resources are less accessible.
Our Friendly Visitors are professionally trained and supervised volunteers who provide home visits, transportation to medical appointments, assistance with grocery shopping, and telephone reassurance calls to adults age 60 and older and to those adults under 65 who are frail due to a long-term health condition. They also assist with light household chores and clerical tasks. These services often enable older or frail adults to continue living in their homes with dignity and independence.
Friendly Visitors come from diverse backgrounds. Some are referred to this program by their churches, synagogues or other houses of worship as part of the national Faith in Action initiative, established by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation.
There is no fee for this program. Funding is provided largely by the Orange County Office for the Aging, United Way of Orange County, the Jewish Federation of Greater Orange County, and private donors. NYS Senator Bill Larkin and Assemblywoman Eileen Gunther are also long-time supporters.
